We are just a few days away from the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 shipping date. The device can already be pre-ordered and it will start to see the users’ hands on June 20, a key date for Microsoft. It will be its third try in the laptop tablet hybrid market. From what we see it seems like they are off to a great start. Let’s dig in:

First thing everyone thinks when they see the Surface Pro 3 is: Is this a laptop? Is this a tablet? Why does it have a pen? According to Microsoft definition this device is “the tablet that can replace your laptop”. So, to put it in simpler words it’s a super tablet. It’s a device to be in the middle way of two paradigms: easy to carry, light, powerful and productive.

It’s all for Display

The first time you look at a Surface Pro 3 all you are going to see is a huge display. And it is all about image quality. The screen is 12-inch clear type display with 3:2 display aspect ratio and 2160 x 1440 resolution. Just like a tablet this display has touch technology and works with 10 touch points that allows you to work with lots of fingers and it also has support for N-trig pressure-sensitive pens, giving you the flexibility to draw and design very detailed images. This should please both art students and on the go architects.

Overall the device measures 11.5 x 7.93 x .36 inches and weighs 1.76 pounds, making it a very portable device with high computational power.

Great Battery, Big Processor, Nice Peripherals and Huge Prices.

The Surface Pro 3 does not fall short when it comes to performance. The device wears a 4th generation Intel® Core™ i3, i5 or i7 – depending on your chosen configuration. Microsoft claims a battery life of up to 9 hours while browsing the web, more than enough to get you through the day.

When it comes to peripherals the device falls short for those who want to use it as a laptop. It only has a MicroSD card slot, 3.5 audio jack, only one full-sized USB 3.0 port and a Mini Display Port for connecting a second display or project presentations.

Now, when it comes to pricing the Surface Pro 3 can be a bit scary. Going through the Microsoft website and playing around with the different configurations a device can cost up to $1,949.00. Yet hold your horses the starting price is $799.00. This means lots of configurations for lots of budgets. What would be your ideal configuration?

Summary

The Surface Pro 3 is the definition of hybrid. Half laptop, half tablet, it manages really well both purposes.
